The Service

Your Keys Are Not Lost, They Are Just on the Wrong Side of the Glass

This is the frustrating one. You know exactly where your keys are, you can probably see them, and none of that helps. Matt attends across Reading and Berkshire and uses non destructive entry to open the vehicle without drilling the lock or breaking a window, so once you are back in, there is nothing else to fix or pay for.

If the keys are not actually in the car and you simply cannot find them, the job is lost car keys instead, where a new key is made from scratch rather than just regaining access.

How Entry Works

What Non Destructive Entry Actually Means

It is not one technique, and the right approach depends entirely on the vehicle and lock type.

Lock Manipulation

Working the lock mechanism itself with specialist tools, leaving it fully functional afterwards.

Door Frame Access

Creating a controlled, temporary gap to reach the internal release, without bending or marking the frame.

Decoding the Lock

On some vehicles the lock can be read and a working key produced on the spot, solving entry and access together.

Never Drilling First

Drilling a lock is a last resort on seized mechanisms, not a shortcut, and it is discussed with you before anything happens.

Most cars built in the last twenty years have deadlocks that stop the inside handle working once the car is locked, which is why a coat hanger or a wedge rarely works and often bends the door frame or damages the window seal.

How It Happened

Common Lockout Situations

Keys left on the seat or in the boot

The classic version. Central locking engaged with the keys still inside, often while loading shopping or luggage.

Smart key locked inside

Keyless systems normally prevent this, but a flat fob battery or signal fault can leave the car locked with the key sitting inside it.

Child or pet locked in the vehicle

Treat this as a genuine emergency and call 999 first if there is any immediate risk, then call Matt. Do not wait for a locksmith if someone is in distress.

Keys locked in with the engine running

More common than people expect, particularly on cold mornings. Still a straightforward entry job, though worth mentioning when you call.

Keys in the Boot

Keys Locked in the Boot

Keys locked in the boot are the one lockout where opening a door is only half the job, and the way in depends on how the boot is built.

Hatchbacks and estatesMatt opens a door, folds a rear seat or uses the boot release inside the cabin, and lifts the keys out.
Saloons and cars with a separately locked bootWhere the seats do not fold through, the boot lock itself is opened without damage.
Vans with rear or side doorsThe cab is opened first, then the load area, which on many vans locks separately with its own deadlock.

If the boot shut on the keys while the car was still unlocked, try the boot release button and the tailgate handle first, because some cars only lock the boot once the doors lock.

The Process

How a Lockout Call Out Works

Usually the quickest job Matt attends.

1Situation confirmed by phone

Vehicle, location, where the keys are, and whether anyone or anything is inside the car.

2Ownership verified on arrival

Proof of ownership is checked before the vehicle is opened, without exception.

3Non destructive entry

The right method for that lock and vehicle, chosen to avoid any damage.

4Locks checked before leaving

Doors, central locking and the lock mechanism are all confirmed working normally.

Important

If Someone Is Locked Inside the Car

Most lockouts are an inconvenience. A few are not. If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is locked inside the vehicle, particularly in warm weather, that is a genuine emergency, not a locksmith call.

Call 999 first, not a locksmith

Emergency services can attend immediately and are equipped to act straight away. Call Matt afterwards if the vehicle still needs opening properly or a key sorting out. No locksmith, however local, should be the first call when the welfare of someone inside is at risk.

Worth Checking First

Is the Car Actually Locked, or Not Responding?

Occasionally a car that seems locked with the keys inside is really a fob that has stopped communicating, with a flat battery or a fault meaning the car simply is not responding to the key in your hand. That is closer to a key fob repair, or sometimes an immobiliser fault. Matt asks a couple of quick questions by phone to work out which situation you are actually in before attending.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Unlock a Car in Reading?

Unlocking a car with the keys locked inside costs from 60 pounds in Reading for a daytime lockout and 90 to 150 pounds in the evening, late at night or at weekends, with the price agreed by phone before Matt sets off and no call out fee.

LockoutTypical price in ReadingWhat changes it
Keys locked in the car, daytimeFrom 60 poundsMost cars and vans opened in minutes
Keys locked in the boot60 to 90 poundsBoot reached from inside or opened by its own lock
Evening, late night or weekend lockout90 to 150 poundsSame method, out of hours attendance
High security or deadlocked vehicle90 to 150 poundsSpecialist tools and a longer entry
Keys not in the car at allPriced as a replacement keyCar opened and a new key made

Entry only jobs are among the more affordable call outs, since nothing needs cutting or programming afterwards. Three things move the price.

Vehicle and lock typeSome security systems take longer to open safely than others.
Time of dayGenuine out of hours emergencies may differ from a standard daytime call out.
Whether a key is also neededPure entry costs less than entry plus cutting a replacement key.

The price is agreed by phone before Matt sets off, with no separate call out fee.

Before You Call

Information to Have Ready

Do not try forcing a door or window first. Improvised entry attempts are the most common way a simple lockout turns into a repair bill. Three checks are worth a minute before you call.

  • Try every door and the boot, since one may not have locked
  • Open the app for your car, which can unlock some newer models remotely
  • Check whether your breakdown cover includes lockouts

If none of those work, have the following ready when you call.

  • Vehicle registration
  • Make, model and approximate year
  • Your exact location in Reading or Berkshire
  • Where the keys are inside the car
  • Whether anyone or a pet is inside the vehicle
  • The V5C logbook or other proof of ownership, plus photo ID

Matt attends personally

The same person quotes the job and opens the vehicle.

Ownership always verified

Protects you as much as it protects the next owner of that car.

Lockouts do not keep office hours, and neither does Matt.
