VW Car Keys in Reading
Volkswagen key replacement, programming and diagnostics using ODIS — VW's own dealer-level software — rather than a generic third-party workaround.
Why Volkswagen Is Different Here
Most auto locksmiths work on Volkswagens using third-party programming tools. Matt has access to ODIS — Volkswagen's own dealer-level diagnostic and programming software — which means VW key work is carried out with the same system a franchised dealer would use, at your home or roadside instead of theirs.
That matters most on the awkward jobs: all-keys-lost situations, security module work, and faults where a generic tool reads a code but can't act on it properly. The same ODIS access covers the rest of the VW Group too — Audi, SEAT and Škoda share much of the same underlying platform.
Dealer Software, Mobile Service
Four practical differences it makes on a Volkswagen job.
New keys written into the vehicle's own system the way the manufacturer intended, not bodged around it.
A stolen or missing key can be deleted from the authorised list so it can no longer start the car.
Immobiliser and component protection work that generic tools often can't complete.
Fewer jobs that end with "you'll have to take it to a dealer" after you've already paid someone.
A Recent Volkswagen Job
A VW Beetle came in with the ignition refusing to switch off and the key stuck fast in the barrel. The obvious guess would have been a worn key. It wasn't — Matt diagnosed a faulty steering lock, a known weak point across the Volkswagen Group range, and replaced the unit on-site from stock carried in the van.
No new key was needed at all, and the car was back in use the same day. It's a good illustration of why diagnosis comes before parts — see ignition and steering lock repair for more on this specific fault.

VW Key Problems That Come Up Most
Steering lock failure
A recognised weak point across the VW Group. Key won't turn, won't release, or the car won't start — and a new key won't fix it. See steering lock repair.
Flip key worn or snapped at the hinge
VW's flip-blade design takes years of folding. The electronics usually survive even when the blade or hinge doesn't, so a full new key often isn't needed.
KESSY keyless entry not detected
Often a fob battery or aerial issue rather than a failed key — worth diagnosing before replacing anything.
Only one key with a used purchase
Very common on second-hand Golfs and Polos. A spare cut now costs far less than an all-keys-lost job later.
How a VW Key Job Works
Which VW, which year, and whether it's a flip key, remote or KESSY system.
Proof of ownership checked before any security work begins.
Blade cut where needed, then the key written into the vehicle's own system.
Locking, unlocking, keyless entry where fitted, and engine start.
What Affects the Cost of a VW Key
Confirmed by phone before Matt attends, with no separate call-out fee.
Information to Have Ready

Including the steering lock issue that catches out generic tools.

One Platform, Four Brands
Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda share much of the same underlying electronics and security architecture as part of the Volkswagen Group. The ODIS access that covers your VW covers the other three as well, which is why they're grouped together rather than treated as unrelated makes.
Keyless Entry and Vehicle Security
VW's KESSY keyless system is convenient, and like all keyless systems it has attracted attention from thieves using relay techniques. Keeping the key away from external doors and windows, or in a signal-blocking pouch, is a simple precaution worth taking on any keyless vehicle.
Vehicle security systems, including keyless entry, are independently researched by organisations such as Thatcham Research, whose findings inform UK manufacturer and insurer approaches to theft prevention.
