Locked Keys in Car — Reading
Keys visible on the seat but the doors are shut? Matt uses non-destructive entry methods to get you back in without damaging the car.
Your Keys Aren't Lost — They're Just on the Wrong Side of the Glass
This is the frustrating one: you know exactly where your keys are, you can probably see them, and none of that helps. Matt attends across Reading and Berkshire and uses non-destructive entry techniques to open the vehicle without drilling the lock or breaking a window — so once you're back in, there's nothing else to fix or pay for.
If the keys aren't actually in the car and you simply can't find them, that's a different job — see lost car keys instead, where a new key needs creating from scratch rather than just regaining access.
What "Non-Destructive Entry" Actually Means
It's not one technique — the right approach depends entirely on the vehicle and lock type.
Working the lock mechanism itself with specialist tools, leaving it fully functional afterwards.
Creating a controlled, temporary gap to reach the internal release, without bending or marking the frame.
On some vehicles the lock can be read and a working key produced on the spot, solving entry and access together.
Drilling a lock is a last resort on seized mechanisms, not a shortcut, and it's discussed with you before anything happens.
Common Lockout Situations
Keys left on the seat or in the boot
The classic version. Central locking engaged with the keys still inside, often while loading shopping or luggage.
Smart key locked inside
Keyless systems normally prevent this, but a flat fob battery or signal fault can leave the car locked with the key sitting inside it.
Child or pet locked in the vehicle
Treat this as a genuine emergency — call 999 first if there's any immediate risk, then call Matt. Don't wait on a locksmith if someone's in distress.
Keys locked in with the engine running
More common than people expect, particularly on cold mornings. Still a straightforward entry job, though worth mentioning when you call.
How a Lockout Call-Out Works
Usually the quickest job Matt attends.
Vehicle, location, where the keys are, and whether anyone or anything is inside the car.
Proof of ownership is checked before the vehicle is opened, without exception.
The right method for that lock and vehicle, chosen to avoid any damage.
Doors, central locking and the lock mechanism are all confirmed working normally.
If Someone Is Locked Inside the Car
Most lockouts are an inconvenience. A few aren't. If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is locked inside the vehicle — particularly in warm weather — that's a genuine emergency, not a locksmith call.
Emergency services can attend immediately and are equipped to act straight away. Call Matt afterwards if the vehicle still needs opening properly or a key sorting out. No locksmith, however local, should be the first call when someone's welfare is at risk.
Is the Car Actually Locked, or Not Responding?
Occasionally a car that seems locked with the keys inside is really a fob that's stopped communicating — a flat battery or a fault meaning the car simply isn't responding to the key in your hand. That's closer to key fob repair, or sometimes an immobiliser issue. Matt asks a couple of quick questions by phone to work out which situation you're actually in before attending.
What Affects the Cost of a Lockout
Entry-only jobs are among the more affordable call-outs, since nothing needs cutting or programming afterwards.
The price is agreed by phone before Matt sets off, with no separate call-out fee.
Information to Have Ready
Don't try forcing a door or window first — improvised entry attempts are the most common way a simple lockout turns into a repair bill.
- Vehicle registration
- Make, model and approximate year
- Your exact location in Reading or Berkshire
- Where the keys are inside the car
- Whether anyone or a pet is inside the vehicle
- Proof of ownership, ready to show on arrival
Cheaper Than a Broken Window
Non-destructive entry means nothing to repair afterwards.
The same person quotes the job and opens the vehicle.
Protects you as much as it protects the next owner of that car.
Lockouts don't keep office hours, and neither does Matt.

In most cases, yes. Non-destructive entry methods are designed to open the vehicle and leave the lock, door and glass exactly as they were.
Same principle applies, entry is gained to the vehicle first, then the boot accessed from inside where the design allows it.
Sometimes briefly, yes, and that's normal. Once entry is made the alarm can be silenced with the keys that were inside all along.
Yes, always, before the vehicle is opened. It's a basic security step that protects you as much as anyone else.
Call 999 first if there's any immediate risk, emergency services can attend faster and act straight away. Call Matt afterwards for the vehicle and key side of it.
It shouldn't happen on most systems, but a flat fob battery or signal fault can cause it. Worth mentioning when you call so Matt knows what to expect.
Often within the hour depending on where Matt already is in Berkshire, and he's available 24/7 for genuine emergencies.
Almost never. A replacement window plus fitting typically costs considerably more than a lockout call-out, before counting the glass clean-up.
Yes, the same non-destructive entry approach applies to vans as well as cars.
That changes the job, and Matt will explain the options before doing anything. It may point to an underlying lock fault worth addressing separately.
