Ignition & Steering Lock Repair in Reading

Key won't turn, won't come out, or the car won't start at all? It's often the ignition barrel or electronic steering lock, not the key — and replacing the key won't fix it.

The Service

When the Problem Isn't the Key at All

This is the service most people arrive at by accident. The key looks fine, maybe it's brand new, and yet the car won't start, the key won't turn, or it won't come out of the ignition. Buying another key doesn't help, because the fault is in the ignition barrel or the electronic steering lock, not in your hand.

Matt's background is 20+ years as a vehicle technician working on diagnostics, ECUs and control modules — before he ever became a locksmith. That's exactly the skill set this job needs, and it's why he diagnoses the actual fault before recommending any parts. See how that background shapes the work.

Symptoms

Signs It's the Lock, Not the Key

If any of these sound familiar, a replacement key almost certainly isn't the answer.

Key Won't Turn

It goes in fully but won't rotate, or needs jiggling and force every single time.

Key Won't Come Out

The ignition won't return to the off position, leaving the key trapped in the barrel.

Car Won't Start

Everything else works — lights, radio, dash — but the engine won't turn over.

Steering Stays Locked

The wheel stays locked in place even with the key inserted and turned.

The Two Systems

Mechanical Barrel vs Electronic Steering Lock

These are genuinely different faults with different fixes, and telling them apart is most of the job.

Ignition Barrel (Mechanical)

The physical lock the key turns in. Wafers and springs inside wear over years of use, eventually binding or refusing to rotate. Often the cause when a key snapped — see broken key extraction.

Electronic Steering Lock (ESL/ELV)

A motorised unit that physically locks the steering column and reports to the vehicle's security system. When it fails, the car typically won't start at all, even with a perfect key.

Immobiliser Communication

Sometimes neither lock is at fault and the vehicle simply isn't recognising the key — that's immobiliser diagnostics territory.

A Worn Key Masking a Lock Fault

Occasionally both are true: a tired key and a tired barrel, each making the other worse. Diagnosis sorts out which needs replacing.

Real Work, Real Vehicles

Two Recent Steering Lock Jobs

Both of these arrived as "the car won't work" — and neither turned out to be a key problem.

Volkswagen Beetle

Ignition Wouldn't Switch Off, Key Wouldn't Release

Called out to a VW Beetle where the ignition wouldn't turn off and the key was stuck in the barrel. Matt diagnosed a faulty steering lock — a known weak point across the VW Group range — and replaced the unit on-site from stock carried in the van. Back on the road the same day, with no new key needed.

No-Start Fault Traced to the Steering Lock

A Mercedes B-Class that wouldn't start at all. Rather than fitting a full replacement unit, Matt used the vehicle's own data to program a steering lock emulator, restoring ignition and saving the customer the cost of a complete parts swap. The diagnostic step is what made the cheaper route possible.

The Process

Diagnosis First, Parts Second

1Symptoms confirmed by phone

Exactly what the key and car are doing, which narrows the likely cause before Matt attends.

2Fault diagnosed on-site

Barrel, steering lock, immobiliser or key — identified with diagnostic equipment, not guesswork.

3Options explained

Repair, programming or replacement, with the cost difference set out before anything is done.

4Fixed and tested

Starting, steering release and key operation all checked before Matt leaves.

Repair or Replace?

Why a Full Unit Swap Isn't Always Needed

The Mercedes job above is a good example — the cheaper route only existed because the fault was properly diagnosed first.

Often repairable or programmable

  • Worn ignition barrel that can be rebuilt or re-keyed
  • Steering lock resolvable with an emulator programmed to the vehicle
  • Communication faults that need coding rather than parts
  • A key that needs re-matching after other work

Usually needs a replacement unit

  • Mechanically seized or internally broken barrel
  • Steering lock motor that has physically failed
  • Water or electrical damage to the unit
  • Vehicles where the manufacturer doesn't support emulation
Pricing

What Affects the Cost

This is the service where diagnosis saves the most money, because the gap between a programmed fix and a full unit replacement can be substantial.

Which system has failedA mechanical barrel and an electronic steering lock are very different jobs.
Repair vs replacementWhere emulation or programming is supported, it's usually cheaper than a new unit.
Vehicle make and modelPart availability and access difficulty vary considerably between manufacturers.
Whether a key is also neededSometimes the lock fault damaged the key, or vice versa.

Matt confirms the likely cost before attending, and explains the options once the fault is confirmed. No call-out fee either way.

Before You Call

Information to Have Ready

Don't keep forcing the key. Repeatedly straining against a binding barrel is how a stuck key becomes a snapped one, turning one job into two.

  • Vehicle registration
  • Make, model and approximate year
  • Your Reading or Berkshire location
  • Whether the key turns at all
  • Whether the dashboard lights come on
  • Whether the steering wheel is locked
  • Whether this started suddenly or got worse over time
  • Proof of ownership, ready to show on arrival
Why Book With Matt

This Is the Job His Background Was Built For

Most locksmiths come from locks. Matt came from vehicle electronics.

Technician, then locksmith

20+ years on diagnostics, ECUs and control modules before specialising in keys.

Diagnosis before parts

The fault gets identified before anything is ordered or replaced.

Cheaper route where it exists

Programming or emulation used when supported, rather than defaulting to a full unit.

Fixed at your vehicle

No recovery to a garage for most jobs — it's done where the car is.
