Immobiliser Diagnostics

Immobiliser Diagnostics in Reading

Car won't start, but the key looks perfectly fine? The immobiliser may not be recognising it — and no amount of new keys will fix a fault in the system itself.

The Service

The Page Every Other Service Points To

Across the rest of this site there's a recurring theme: before replacing a key, check whether the key was ever the problem. This is where that check happens. The immobiliser is the electronic gatekeeper that decides whether a key is authorised to start your engine — and when it develops a fault, a brand new key will be rejected exactly like the old one.

Matt spent 20+ years as a vehicle technician working with ECUs, control modules and diagnostics before specialising in keys, which is why this is the part of the job he's best equipped for. Read more about that background, or see how it applies to ignition and steering lock faults.

How It Works

What Happens Every Time You Start the Car

Four steps that occur in under a second — and a fault at any one of them stops the engine.

1The key sends a signal

A transponder chip inside the key transmits a unique coded identifier to the vehicle.

2The antenna reads it

A receiver ring or antenna around the ignition, or in the cabin, picks up that signal.

3The system checks it

The immobiliser module compares the code against the keys it has stored as authorised.

4The ECU is released

Only if the code matches does the engine control unit allow fuel and ignition.

Symptoms

Signs the Immobiliser Is the Problem

Engine turns over but won't fire

The starter motor works, the battery is fine, but the engine never catches. A classic immobiliser signature, since fuel and ignition are being withheld deliberately.

Immobiliser or key warning light

A dashboard symbol — often a car with a padlock or a key outline — staying lit or flashing rather than going out after a few seconds.

Both keys stopped working together

If two separate keys fail at the same time, the common factor is almost certainly the car, not the keys.

A brand new key still won't start it

The clearest sign of all. If a freshly cut and programmed key is rejected too, replacing keys isn't the answer — see car key programming for where that line sits.

Intermittent starting

Works most days, fails occasionally, usually in cold or damp weather. Often a failing antenna ring or a marginal connection.

Started after other electrical work

A battery change, ECU replacement or bodywork repair can desync the security system even when nothing was wrong before.

Where It Fails

Four Places the Chain Can Break

Diagnosis is a process of working out which link failed — each has a very different fix and cost.

The Transponder Chip

The chip in the key itself can fail or lose its stored data, though this is the least common cause.

The Antenna Ring

The receiver around the ignition barrel. A common failure point, and often behind intermittent starting.

The Immobiliser Module

The control unit storing authorised keys. Faults here typically reject every key, new or old.

Wiring and Connections

Corroded plugs, damaged looms or poor earths between modules, often the cause after other repairs.

Real Example

When Diagnosis Saved a Full Parts Replacement

Mercedes B-Class no-start fault diagnosed and resolved by Key Genie

A Mercedes B-Class arrived as a straightforward "won't start" job. The obvious assumption would have been a key fault, and the expensive assumption would have been replacing the security module outright. Neither was right — the fault was traced to the electronic steering lock, and Matt resolved it by programming a replacement emulator using the vehicle's own data rather than fitting a full new unit.

That cheaper option only existed because the fault was properly identified first. It's the clearest argument for diagnosing before buying parts, and it's why this page exists separately from key replacement.

The Process

How Diagnosis Actually Works

1Symptoms and history

What it does, when it started, and whether any other work was done just before.

2Fault codes read

Diagnostic equipment connected to see what the vehicle itself is reporting.

3Chain tested in order

Key, antenna, module and wiring checked to isolate which link has actually failed.

4Options and costs explained

What's wrong, what fixes it, and what each route costs — before anything is ordered.

Being Straight With You

What Matt Can and Can't Sort

Immobiliser faults sit on the boundary between locksmithing and vehicle electrics, and it's worth being clear about where that boundary falls rather than promising everything.

Well within scope: key and transponder faults, antenna ring problems, key programming and re-syncing, security-module coding, steering lock faults, and identifying exactly which component has failed.

Sometimes a garage job, not a locksmith one

If diagnosis points to a failed ECU, a wider wiring loom fault, or an engine management problem that only looks like a security issue, Matt will tell you that plainly rather than charging to attempt something better suited to a specialist auto-electrician. Knowing what the fault is still saves you money, even when he isn't the one fixing it.

Pricing

What Affects the Cost

Diagnosis and repair are separate things here. Matt confirms the diagnostic cost upfront, then explains repair options and prices once he knows what's actually wrong.

Which component failedA key fault, an antenna ring and a security module are very different repairs.
Repair vs replacementCoding or emulation is usually cheaper than fitting a new module where it's supported.
Vehicle make and systemSome manufacturers require dealer-level software and take longer to work with.
How long it takes to findIntermittent faults are inherently harder to pin down than a consistent failure.

No call-out fee, and no work carried out before you've agreed the price.

Before You Call

Information to Have Ready

Intermittent faults are the hardest to diagnose, so anything you can tell Matt about when it fails is genuinely useful — cold mornings, after rain, only when the tank is low, and so on.

  • Vehicle registration
  • Make, model and approximate year
  • Your Reading or Berkshire location
  • Whether the engine turns over at all
  • Which warning lights are showing
  • Whether a spare key behaves the same way
  • Any recent battery, ECU or electrical work
  • Whether it fails every time or only sometimes
Why Book With Matt

A Technician Who Became a Locksmith

Most auto locksmiths learned keys first. Matt learned vehicle electronics first, which is the right way round for this particular job.

20+ years on diagnostics

ECUs, control modules and fault-finding, long before specialising in keys.

Dealer-level software

ODIS for VW Group vehicles, plus Autel, Smart Pro, Xhorse, ACDP and Lonsdor equipment.

Honest about scope

Tells you when a fault belongs with an auto-electrician rather than charging to guess.

Diagnosed at your vehicle

No recovery to a garage for most faults — it's done where the car is.

Why Systems Are This Complex

Immobilisers Exist Because They Work

It's easy to resent a security system when it's stopping your own car from starting. Worth remembering it's also the reason driving away in a modern vehicle without the right key is far harder than it once was — electronic immobilisers have been a standard fitment on UK cars since the late 1990s.

Independently researched security

Vehicle security systems and their effectiveness are assessed by research organisations such as Thatcham Research, whose work informs how manufacturers and insurers approach vehicle theft prevention in the UK.
